During this lecture we are talking about the role of the ME and what he has to do what is expected. And as I said all of the different roles that he has to combine and that he has to fulfill in order to make sure that this process goes all accordingly. And it has the result that we are expecting OK. Most people find conflict in the workplace very difficult.
Most people find comfort this. Most people don’t want to deal with it let alone be in the middle of it and try to bring parts of it together. The role of the mediator is very complex and he fills in a bunch of different roles that we will be discussing in the next few minutes. And we’ll also be telling more him to detail what it means and also provide a few examples in order to have a clear understanding of what’s expected and of how he should behave.
OK the first role that the media should fulfill is basically the role of facilities. So people in this piece people in conflicts tend to not talk to one another how they should tempers run high. You want to prove your point. You want to challenge the other person. That’s not really the best approach.
As a facilitator the mediator basically has to create a certain set of rules in order to assure that communication flows in a proper way in order to make sure that everybody’s opinion and voices be heard. And in order to make sure that everybody is being brought in an equal amount in the process. So as I said it’s as easy as making some simple rules.
For example we don’t talk over one another. We take turns in the circusy we do not bring up past events or past memories into the discussion. We keep our focus at the issue at hand and not deviate into other subjects. This is the role of the facility in this role you have to create rules you have to make sure that people abide by them and that they make sense and everybody is on board before you start doing the actual process.
You need to set ground rules. People speak over one another. Everybody’s opinion is being heard everybody’s opinion is being discussed. We’re only talking about the issue at hand.
We’re not bringing in past problems in order to prove a point in this point of time. So this is the first all the role of the facility. The next role will be the role of the translator.
Once we have all of these rules in place once we have the process and a procedure in order to reach a conclusion where in order to solve the conflict we need to have a translator that’s what does it mean.
Terry People sometimes say things that hurt people sometimes say things that are bad. The role of the translator is to take this information from one side and translate that into something that has a bit less about something that is not that acid is something that is easy to digest this.
The goal is not to change the ME but to change the world in order for people to digest the information easier. As I said people sometimes say things that the translator is there to find the information that is wanting to be asked and to basically kind of address it in order for the other person to find it more acceptable. Take the state out of the words and avoid translating something that is not real. Avoid translating something that kind of resonates to you on a personal level and try to be objective. This is the goal of the translator the next one you .
I want to talk about is the clarifier in this role as I said before. And one of the as the lectures you need to ask questions you need to question the other person in order to understand what is going on in order to understand the root cause of the problem. The clarifier is just that the clarifier comes forward and asks questions.
What does this mean. What does it mean for you. What bothered you. What was the problem. What do you hope to achieve. What do you want to change. These are all questions that need to be asked because maybe on the surface level the conflict is not what we believe it to be. Maybe the cause is deep or maybe the conflict is being understood differently by both parties.
The classifiers goal is to ask these questions in order to make sure that both parties have the same information that they view the same problem and actually different issues because if they deal with different issues then they will never be able to solve them because they don’t understand the root cause of the problem.
For each of the other or each of the other people ok for the next one will be the catalyst for them is to generate alternatives and generate ideas. You have to be a catalyst in the sense that that’s not you proposing the solution but you’re helping people get out of a rut.
You’re helping people create ideas and creating alternatives. You’re basically telling them things like OK that’s not a problem that you can find the solution. Exactly right now.
But had this different case I’ve had this different situation. I’ve been in this situation and I learned that people kind of have this solution to the problem here is not to impose a solution but to create alternatives to give them ideas on which they can then start creating their own. Helping them find a solution .
giving them alternatives and then allowing them to change those ideas based on the specifics of the current conflict or the current problem. You’re just throwing solutions you’re just throwing back years that they can then use to generate their own alternatives. And that’s very important in order to understand it.
That’s very important. In order to reach a conclusion. So what are actually the most important skills that the media has is to be able to communicate openly to people to be able to set some ground rules be able to translate and interpret the information that he hears and also be able to provide solutions for the people in order for them to solve their problems.
